It is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of the People's Republic of China and is located in central Xinjiang. It is bordered by Changji Prefecture to the east and west, Turpan Prefecture to the southeast, Bayinguoleng Prefecture to the southwest, Wujiaqu Prefecture to the northwest, and Altay Prefecture to the north. It is located at the northern foot of the middle section of the Tianshan Mountains and the southern edge of the Junggar Basin, surrounded by mountains in the east, south and west, with the terrain being high in the south and low in the north.
